The northern section of the George Washington National Forest covers a vast swath of the Shenandoah Valley and Allegheny Mountains. This area offers some of Virginia's best bear hunting, with dense mountain forests providing excellent habitat. Deer and turkey hunting are productive throughout, and grouse can be found in the higher-elevation laurel thickets. The expansive public land allows hunters to access truly remote backcountry areas far from roads.
